Which A&E is open in Portugal? Where should I go?
A nurse assesses the situation over the phone and tells you whether to go to A&E, to a health centre (centro de saúde) or to treat it at home. If needed, they refer you to the right place.
Why we don't show our own list
Emergency departments (urgências) open and close depending on staff rotas, especially obstetrics and paediatrics at weekends. A copied list could be wrong at the very moment you need it, so we always send you to the official SNS (national health service) pages, which are updated every hour.
This page does not assess symptoms and does not replace a health professional. If in doubt, call SNS 24 (national health line).
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which A&E departments are open today?
On the official SNS map, which shows open A&E departments and their hours for the next 7 days, updated hourly.
Should I call SNS 24 before going to A&E?
If it is not an emergency, yes: SNS 24 (808 24 24 24) tells you if you need A&E and where to go. If life is at risk, call 112.
