How we calculated it
You get paid for the holiday days you didn't take, plus the share of holidays, holiday allowance and Christmas allowance for the time you worked this year.
These are gross amounts, subject to IRS (income tax) and Segurança Social (social security). Severance pay is not included.
Example: you started on 1 February 2026 with a €1,000 base salary and you leave on 31 July. You worked 181 days of the year. Each item is worth €1,000 × 181 ÷ 365, which is €495.89: pro-rata holiday, holiday allowance and Christmas allowance. In total you get €1,487.67 gross, on top of your July salary.
Frequently asked questions
Am I entitled to pro-rata pay if I resign?
Yes. Whatever the reason you leave, you get your unused holidays plus pro-rata holiday pay, holiday allowance and Christmas allowance.
Is pro-rata pay taxed?
Yes. It is employment income, so IRS (income tax) and Segurança Social are deducted.
Do I get pro-rata pay if I leave during the trial period?
Yes. Even in the trial period (período experimental), you get pro-rata holiday, holiday allowance and Christmas allowance for the time worked. What there usually is not is severance pay.
Can I swap holiday days for money?
While the contract lasts, as a rule no: holidays must be taken. Untaken holidays are only paid in cash when the contract ends. The exception is days above 20 working days, which you can give up while keeping the pay and the allowance.
How many days of holiday do I get in my first year?
In the year you start, you get 2 working days for each full month of contract, up to 20 days. You can only take them after 6 full months of contract.
