Mainland Portugal: income tax is lower in the Azores and Madeira · Figures checked in October 2026 · See assumptions ↓

We count 22 days a month. Tax-free up to €10.46 a day on a card or €6.15 in cash; any excess pays IRS and Segurança Social.
How it was calculated

Gross salary minus 11% for Segurança Social (social security) and minus IRS (income tax) withholding from the official 2026 table (Table I, II or III depending on your family situation, mainland).

Withholding is an advance payment: your final IRS is settled in the annual tax return. It does not cover disability or the Autonomous Regions. With IRS Jovem, withholding is worked out on your whole salary and applied only to the non-exempt part.

Example: you earn €1,200 gross a month, you are married, you both have income and you have one child. You get an €8 daily meal allowance on a card. Segurança Social takes €132 and IRS withholding takes €74.79. The 22 days of meal allowance add up to €176 tax-free, because they stay below €10.46 a day. You take home €1,169.21 a month. In November 2026, with withholding halved, you get about €1,206.61.

The halved withholding in November 2026 applies only on the mainland and not to salaries above €20,221. Meal allowance is tax-free up to €6.15 a day in cash or €10.46 on a meal card; anything above pays IRS and Segurança Social.
