How it was calculated

Cars registered since July 2007 pay one part based on engine size and another based on CO₂, multiplied by a coefficient for the year. Older cars pay a fixed amount based on engine size and age. 100% electric cars do not pay.

In 2026, IUC (annual road tax) is paid in the month of registration; from 2027 everyone has the same dates (in 2027, in October, or July and October if above €500). 2026 tables.

Example: you have a 2015 diesel car with 1,600 cm³ and 110 g/km of CO₂ under the NEDC standard. It pays €63.74 for engine size and €65.15 for CO₂. That sum is multiplied by the year coefficient of 1.15, and the €10.07 diesel surcharge is added. IUC comes to €158.29 a year. A 100% electric car would pay nothing.

Frequently asked questions

When is IUC paid?

In 2026, in the month the car was registered. From 2027 everyone has the same dates: in 2027, in October (or July and October, above €500).

Do electric cars pay IUC?

No. 100% electric cars are exempt.

How do I pay IUC?

On the Portal das Finanças, you get the IUC payment document with a payment reference. Then you pay at a Multibanco cash machine, through online banking or at a tax office, by the deadline.

Does a car that is off the road pay IUC?

Yes. IUC is due as long as the car is registered in your name, even if it is not driven or insured. It only stops once the registration is cancelled, for example when the car is scrapped.

Do hybrid cars pay IUC?

Yes. They pay for engine size and CO₂, like other combustion cars. As they usually have lower emissions, the CO₂ part tends to be smaller. Only 100% electric cars are exempt.
